With a great level of awareness, it becomes obvious that we ultimately choose to be surrounded with 'unconscious programming' including desires, friend problems, family issues, collective guilt, fears and consumerism to name a few.
A great example of this is right now as you are reading. What filter (unconscious programming) are you using to process this information. Will you dismiss it or will you sit with it for a while and ask yourself some further questions? Most will simply park this in the "that doesn't suit 'MY STORY' basket"
There is no doubt, moving towards our greatest sins is unimaginably hard to do, the level of consistency needed, resistance from family/friends, fear of self-discovery and the posture required to do this, is one of life's greatest challenges. To stay conscious and alive in the adults world, day-in, day-out, for most, unconscious creep becomes the new go-to strategy. We choose small actions everyday that allow us to NOT look at those things we least want to confront about ourselves.
"If you are ever tempted to look for outside approval; realise that you have compromised your integrity. If you need a witness, be your own" Epictetus - Stoic philosopher
Why is it that we can't ignore our phones, why the compulsion to check the latest status? In that moment, we are making a crucial decision with our inner-integrity, this programmed distraction, keeps us from our sins. For most people, tragically, they seek out friends, family members, activities that support this. These distractions we create and control are put in place, simply because we don't want to feel so bad about ourselves.
The big question here is, if we want to change where do we start?
If you are interested in exploring this, start with simply listening to the 'inner-voice/critic' and the current conversation your having with yourself. From my experience, journal writing in the morning is a great way to begin. A cliche, I didn't say it would be easy but I will say that it will be worth it.
